More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt's "The Parisienne (Virginie)" is a captivating example of 19th-century portraiture that superbly illustrates the elegance and introspective mood of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Created in 1883, this painting captures the languid pose and pensive expression of a young Parisian woman named Virginie. The work is remarkable for its detailed realism combined with a rich, emotive atmosphere. The woman, with her gently flushed cheeks and softly curled hair, reclines against an oriental-style screen adorned with bamboo motifs, suggesting a fascination with exotic cultures during that era. Her gaze is distant and reflective, lending an air of melancholy and depth to the scene. Draped in a shawl with vibrant floral designs and detailed embroidery, she embodies both the sophistication and the fashionable aspects of her time.In the dimly lit background, a figure can be glimpsed by a doorway, adding to the narrative intrigue of the painting. The juxtaposition of the detailed, brightly lit foreground where Virginie rests, against the shadowy, less defined background, enhances the sense of personal isolation and introspective moment captured within the frame."The Parisienne (Virginie)" not only showcases Edelfelt's technical prowess with texture and light but also reflects the artist’s ability to convey profound narratives through expressions and subtle compositional elements.
