More about this artwork

Explore the tranquil beauty of Edward Mitchell Bannister's painting "Untitled (landscape with two cows)" from 1898. This evocative work captures the serene and pastoral qualities that Bannister, an important African American artist of the 19th century, is celebrated for. In the painting, a lush and softly brushed landscape serves as the backdrop for the gentle daily life of rural areas. Here, Bannister portrays two cows grazing peacefully in a field. Their forms are integrated harmoniously into the natural environment, highlighting the artist's skillful use of earthy tones and subtle shades. The foreground is filled with a variety of green hues, punctuated by the brown and black colors of the cows, which draw the eye amidst the expansiveness of the landscape. The background fades into a light, almost misty horizon, suggesting the vastness and beauty of the scene. The sky above is depicted with soft, swirling strokes of white and blue, suggesting a quiet, overcast day. On the far right, a hint of human presence – a small figure near a structure – subtly reminds us of humanity's place within nature, yet it’s the simplicity and the quiet majesty of the natural world that truly captivate.Bannister’s work eloquently expresses the calmness and timeless quality of the landscape, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the natural beauty that surrounds us everyday.
