More about this artwork

** Evoking a serene yet grand vista, Edward Lear's painting "Philae" depicts the majestic landscapes surrounding the famous island of Philae in Egypt. This finely detailed work captures the rich textures and natural beauty of the rocky island terrain, juxtaposed against a tranquil body of water that mirrors the clear skies above. In his characteristic style, Lear spreads the canvas with a panoramic view of the island, accented by rugged boulders and gentle undulations of earthy tones. Toward the center, the ruins of ancient temples stand as silent witnesses to bygone eras, their stone surfaces glowing warmly under the affectionate gaze of the sun. The distant hills, awash with haze, add a layer of mystery and depth to the painting, inviting viewers to ponder the timeless allure of this historic site."Philae" beautifully showcases Lear’s keen eye for detail and his profound appreciation for natural scenery. As one of the great travel artists of the 19th century, Lear not only captured scenes visually but also imbued them with emotional and historical significance, making his works enduring pieces to be treasured.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
