More about this artwork

"Under a Black Star" (1918) by Paul Klee is a captivating exploration of color and form that engages the viewer through its abstract and mystical qualities. This painting showcases Klee's unique ability to blend whimsy with profound symbolism, drawing us into a world simultaneously familiar and fantastical. In the painting, vibrant patches of color create a fragmented landscape, serving as a backdrop to the dominant features: a prominent black star and a small, central figure, perhaps indicative of a human or spiritual presence. The black star hovers over the scene, imparting a sense of cosmic significance, while the figure below seems contemplative, gazing upward or beyond.Klee's use of texture adds depth to the tableau, with meticulous strokes and speckles that suggest a dynamic, ever-evolving universe. Each element within the painting contributes to a sense of balance and tension, inviting viewers to ponder their relationship with the cosmos and the hidden depths of the human psyche."Under a Black Star" not only exemplifies Klee's mastery over abstract visual language but also resonates with themes of existential reflection and the perpetual dance between chaos and order.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
