More about this artwork

On display is a striking and vivid political cartoon by Udo Keppler titled "Don’t Shoot! I’ll Let Go!" created in 1914. This piece, known for both its bold artistic style and profound historical resonance, captures a turbulent era in American history through allegory and symbolism. The painting depicts a tumultuous sea scene where Uncle Sam, symbolizing the United States, is furiously rowing a small boat labeled “Business Freedom.” Beside him, a character dressed in a sea captain's outfit, represents a business tycoon, who is simultaneously amused and confident as he points a large handgun at a monstrous octopus. The octopus, a common metaphor for monopolistic corporations during this period, has its tentacles intricately wrapped around a steel cylinder marked “Interlocking Directorates.” This choice of imagery criticizes the practice where the same individuals would sit on the boards of multiple competing companies, thus stifling competition and manipulating industries. The dynamic nature of the waves and the ominous stormy sky add to the overall urgency and drama of the scene, suggesting a pivotal moment of confrontation between governmental power and corporate influence. Through this compelling artwork, Keppler comments on the pressing socio-economic issues of his time, highlighting the ongoing battle for true business freedom against corporate overreach. This painting not only serves as an essential artifact of its era but also continues to resonate as a reflection on the balance of power in economic landscapes.
