More about this artwork

"Rotten Finance", a striking and evocative artwork by Udo Keppler created in 1907, serves as a powerful satirical commentary on the fragile nature of economic systems and the pervasive corruption within financial institutions. The painting features a caricature of a figure representing 'Finance', stylistically drawn to resemble Humpty Dumpty, having a calamitous fall from a wall, subsequently breaking apart upon impact. The central image of the cracked egg-like figure, labeled "Confidence", is depicted in vivid detail, spilling a yellow substance—presumably symbolizing lost wealth or the leakage of trust and reliability in financial dealings. Around this central figure, a mass of grotesque and distorted faces hovers in the background, each expressing various emotions from shock to dismay. These faces represent the public, the ordinary citizens who are often the spectators and victims of financial instabilities and schemes.Adding a touch of interpretative depth, the words from the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty" are inscribed at the bottom, drawing a parallel between the story’s themes of irreparable downfall and the tumultuous nature of financial markets that, once shattered, cannot easily be restored to their former stability.
