More about this artwork

"Old Man Seated, Academy Study" (1874 - 1875) by Albert Edelfelt is a striking portrayal capturing a wealth of emotion and a profound sense of humanity. This painting features an elderly man, bare from the waist up, seated against a dark, undefined background that accentuates his figure. The subject's long, flowing beard and the thoughtful, upwards gaze lend the composition a contemplative air, inviting viewers to ponder the man's thoughts and experiences.Edelfelt’s mastery in this work is evident in the delicate rendering of the textures of skin and hair, as well as the interplay of light and shadow. Each brushstroke contributes to the overall impact of the painting, bringing a raw, tangible realism that makes the old man's presence almost palpable. This piece is an exemplary study of form and the human condition, showcasing Edelfelt's academic rigor and his sensitivity towards the subjects of his artworks. Visitors are encouraged to linger on the details, such as the intricate lines on the man’s face, each telling a story of age, wisdom, and perhaps resilience.
