More about this artwork

"Windermere During the Regatta" (1832) by David Cox captures a vibrant and bucolic scene set against the backdrop of the serene Lake Windermere. This exquisite painting invites viewers into a picturesque moment during a regatta, a popular boat racing event of the time. The landscape is finely detailed with lush trees and a calm lake, giving a peek into the refreshing beauty of the English Lake District. In the foreground, Cox presents a lively gathering of elegantly dressed figures, likely local gentry or visitors, who are enjoying the regatta festivities. Men, women, and children are depicted in colorful attire, conversing, strolling, and engaging in the leisurely pleasure of the day. The presence of children playing and a dog adds a charming touch to the animated group, suggesting a day of communal joy and relaxation. The painting is bright and airy, with soft, diffuse light filtering through the leaves of the tall trees that anchor the composition on both sides. This lighting enhances the festive mood and the natural beauty of the setting. To the distant left, several sailboats can be seen racing on the shimmering waters, adding a sense of motion and excitement that contrasts with the tranquil scene on shore.David Cox, known for his mastery in capturing atmospheric effects and pastoral landscapes, brilliantly conveys both the tranquility of the natural surroundings and the vibrant energy of a social gathering.

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.

He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.

Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter."

His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809–1885), was also a successful artist.
