More about this artwork

"Revelation of Angels to Shepherds" by Albert Edelfelt is a captivating portrayal of a celestial event, evoking a profound sense of awe and wonder. Painted in 1899, this piece masterfully depicts the biblical story of the annunciation to the shepherds, a moment where angels descend to Earth to reveal the birth of Jesus Christ to the humble shepherds. In the painting, the central figure is an angel, resplendent and glowing, who appears amidst a nocturnal backdrop. The angel, with wide-spread wings and a flowing robe, reaches out in a gesture of revelation and proclamation. Her ethereal presence radiates light, illuminating the surrounding darkness and casting an otherworldly glow on the group of shepherds. The shepherds themselves are rendered with striking emotion and diverse expressions; awe, fear, reverence, and wonder are all captured through Edelfelt's skillful use of shadow and light on their rugged faces. Clad in simple, humble attire, they gaze up in amazement and disbelief at the heavenly visitor.Edelfelt's use of contrasting light and dark tones not only highlights the angel and her divine glow but also enhances the dramatic intensity of the scene. This artwork not only portrays a miraculous biblical event but also explores the theme of divine interaction with humanity, emphasizing the humility and marvel of the shepherds.
