More about this artwork

Our exhibit features the exquisite work "Bairei gafu, Pl.32" by renowned Japanese artist Kōno Bairei, an illustration master of the Meiji era. This beautiful artwork, created in 1905, is an exemplar of Bairei's delicate and precise style, focusing on the natural world through traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques. In "Bairei gafu, Pl.32," we see a vivid depiction of a bird perched elegantly on a tree branch. The bird, rendered in shades of red and gray, exudes a sense of life and motion, almost as if it could fly off the page at any moment. The distinct feathers and keen eyes of the bird are portrayed with meticulous attention to detail, characteristic of Bairei's work.Surrounding the bird are lush, leafy branches that stretch across the composition, embellished with a few subtle pink blossoms that suggest the season might be spring. The use of color is restrained yet impactful, highlighting the bird and flowers against the more subdued tones of the tree and background.Kōno Bairei's skill in blending artistic beauty with naturalistic detail makes this painting not only a visual delight but also a study in the harmony between flora and fauna.
