More about this artwork

Artist: John Constable**We are delighted to present "Portrait of Eliza Lewis," an enchanting work by the renowned British artist John Constable. This portrait, crafted with tenderness and a keen eye for emotional depth, depicts a young girl in a moment of serene contemplation. The child, identified as Eliza Lewis, is portrayed with soft, rounded cheeks flushed with a gentle hint of rose, suggesting the flush of youth and vitality.Constable's brushwork in this piece is notably loose and impressionistic, allowing the texture of the canvas to imbue the portrait with a lively, almost tactile presence. The light seems to dance on Eliza's face and on her delicate pink dress, highlighting her guileless expression and the purity of her gaze. Her eyes, soft and wide, engage directly with the viewer, creating a connection that transcends time and place. This painting, though perhaps less known among Constable's landscapes, showcases his versatile ability to capture not only the dramatic atmospheres of skies and fields but also the subtle complexities of human emotions. "Portrait of Eliza Lewis" offers a glimpse into the personal life of Constable and reflects his skill in portraiture, an intimate counterpoint to his grand pastoral scenes.

John Constable RA was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for revolutionising the genre of landscape painting with his pictures of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country" – which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".
