More about this artwork

We are delighted to feature the exquisite artwork “Mrs. Walter Rathbone Bacon (Virginia Purdy Barker, 1862–1919)” completed in 1897 by the renowned Swedish painter Anders Zorn. This painting captures the elegance and composed demeanor of Virginia Purdy Barker, a prominent American socialite of the late 19th century. Rendered with Zorn’s characteristic vibrant brushstrokes and a luminous palette, the composition conveys a rich atmosphere and the subtle interplay of light and texture. The portrait depicts Mrs. Bacon seated in an opulent setting, adorned in a flowing white gown embellished with soft floral accents that echo the blossoming of her own serene and gracious personality. Her expression, which combines a gentle gaze and a hint of a knowing smile, invites viewers into her sophisticated world. Completing this serene tableau is a loyal and beautifully rendered collie dog, lying contentedly beside her, which adds a touch of warmth and domesticity to the portrait.Zorn's masterful use of light enhances the textural contrasts between the soft fabrics of Mrs. Bacon's dress and the glossy coat of her canine companion. This painting not only showcases Zorn’s skill in portraiture but also his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with empathy and depth.
