More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt's evocative painting, "Rumpali Nord," transports viewers to the past with its meticulous depiction of a drummer from the celebrated collection of poems, "Vänrikki Stoolin tarinat" (Tales of Ensign Stål) by the Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. This artwork, created between 1897 and 1900, forms part of Edelfelt’s illustrious endeavor to illustrate these tales, celebrated for their portrayal of the Finnish War of 1808-1809 against Russia. In "Rumpali Nord," the observer is met with the striking figure of a drummer, dressed in a traditional military uniform. His attire includes a dark-buttoned jacket, adorned with medals that hint at his brave service, and a distinct helmet topped with a gleaming gold ornament, reflecting his rank and the military aesthetics of the era. He carries a drum strapped across his chest, held by a leather belt, suggesting readiness to march into battle or sound the rhythm of the troops. The figure’s expression, a mix of solemnity and pride, captures the spirit and patriotism of Runeberg’s poetry, reflecting the emotions of a soldier who has experienced the grim realities of war yet continues to stand resolute and dutiful.Albert Edelfelt's mastery in art does not merely recreate a visual likeness but evokes the deep-seated emotions and the vibrant history of Finland, making "Rumpali Nord" not just a portrait, but a narrative woven in strokes of color and shadow.
