More about this artwork

"At The Hearth" is a poignant and richly textured painting by Jozef Israëls, a master of the Dutch Hague School, known for his ability to capture human emotion and the simple beauty of everyday life. In this evocative work, Israëls illustrates an elderly woman seated by a fireplace, her body slightly hunched, enveloped in a dim, warmly lit room that speaks of quiet solitude. The warm glow of the fire casts a gentle light across her face and hands, focusing the viewer's attention on her actions. She appears to be poking at the embers, perhaps to keep the warmth alive, a metaphor for sustaining life itself. The painting's muted palette of dark browns and shadowy greys, contrasting with the fire's orange and the mellow yellow of the lit background, enhances the feeling of intimacy and seclusion. This masterful use of light not only highlights the woman's weathered features and contemplative expression but also transforms an ordinary moment into a scene filled with emotional depth and universal significance.Israëls’ skillful brushwork and his compassionate portrayal of elder people, as seen in "At The Hearth," invites viewers to reflect on themes of aging, perseverance, and the fleeting nature of time.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
