More about this artwork

Expressing a raw and visceral study of the human form, Albert Edelfelt's painting "Male Model, Academy Study" (1874), showcases a powerful representation of a male figure viewed from behind. Born in Finland in 1854, Edelfelt was profoundly influenced by academic traditions, and this artwork is a testament to his rigorous training and exceptional skill in realism. The painting captures the male model standing against a dark, neutral background that accentuates the light tones of his skin. The focus is on the muscular and sinewy curves of his back that stretch down towards the well-defined glutes, highlighting a strong and disciplined anatomy. The way light softly fades across his skin illuminates the subject, crafting a three-dimensional appearance that seems to bring the figure to life. This particular pose, with the model looking away from the viewer, adds a sense of mystery and introspection. Edelfelt's technique in portraying the textures of skin and muscle shows not only his mastery over oil mediums but also a deep understanding of human anatomy. The painting is more than just a study; it is a celebration of human form and the excellence of traditional academic art.For art enthusiasts and scholars alike, Edelfelt's work remains an inspiring example of 19th-century European art and its enduring legacy in the study of the human form within the academic spheres of art.
