More about this artwork

We are delighted to present Plate 45 from Kōno Bairei's "Bairei Gafu," a remarkable example of Meiji era artwork that intricately captures the harmony of nature. This exquisite piece, created in 1905, portrays a bird delicately poised amidst a flutter of tender branches and leaves. The detailed illustration invites viewers to witness a moment of serene interaction between avian and flora. The bird, rendered with precision, clutches gracefully onto a slender twig, suggesting a scene of delicate balance and fleeting tranquility. The fine linework and subtle gradations of ink demonstrate Bairei's mastery in capturing both the spirit and minutiae of his subjects. This piece serves not only as an aesthetic representation but also as a cultural artifact, reflecting the refined appreciation for nature and artistry that characterizes traditional Japanese art.
