More about this artwork

Paul Klee's 1920 painting "Kinder Und Hund" (Children And Dog) presents a captivating tableau marked by the artist's distinctive abstract style. In this visually intriguing piece, the figures of children and a dog are simplified to basic forms, bordered by a warm array of ochre, amber, and crimson hues that echo the playful and mysterious tones which often permeate Klee's work. The painting almost appears as a fragment of a dream, where each character, though abstractly depicted with minimal detail, resonates with a sense of individuality and expression. The image is structured into horizontal and vertical colored sections that subtly interact with the figures, blending the boundaries between the tangible and the imaginative. The dog, though rudimentarily sketched, is recognizable and adds a sense of companionship to the scene, while the children's expressions suggest engagement in a silent yet profound interaction.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
