More about this artwork

"This Will Be an Internal Explosion" (1898) is a captivating illustration by Udo Keppler that uses a rich array of symbolic elements to comment intelligently on political circumstances involving Spain at the turn of the 20th century. In this vibrant and detailed piece, viewers are presented with a scene filled with historical and visual allegories.Centered in the artwork is a regal figure symbolizing Spain, slumped over a throne, exhausted or possibly defeated, clad in opulent robes and a crown. His posture and expression subtly hint at the nation’s weariness amidst its declining global influence. Adjacent to him, a Roman Catholic priest, wielding significant power and influence, stands solemnly. His position and demeanor suggest the church's watchful eye and authoritative stance over the nation’s affairs.Adding to the historical narrative, the illustrated portraits of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, depicted with regal and stately composure, remind the viewer of Spain’s influential past. On the other side, a portrait of a more contemporary figure, possibly a ruler, mirrors the decline suggested by the central figure's posture.Intriguingly, the slumping central figure is barely holding onto a bomb labeled "WAR," signifying the fragile and volatile state of the nation, teetering on the brink of chaos. The man pulling back the curtain to reveal this scene serves as a metaphor for an unveiling truth or hidden reality being exposed to the viewer.Udo Keppler's illustration is not only a politically charged piece but also a masterclass in allegorical art, inviting reflective thought on the complexities of power, legacy, and the burden of historical inheritance.
