More about this artwork

In the evocative earthy tones that characterize much of Jean François Raffaëlli’s work, "Place St. Sulpice, Paris" captures a lively yet serene scene of daily life at one of Paris’s notable squares. This painting invites the viewer to step back into a moment of the late 19th century, showcasing the bustling activity around the St. Sulpice Church, a landmark famed for its impressive architecture and twin spires, which are prominently featured in the background. The artist uses a subdued palette to convey the overcast sky and damp pavement, suggesting a recent rainfall that has left the square's cobblestones gleaming underfoot. The composition teems with life; from elegantly dressed Parisians engaging in casual strolls to children playing and townsfolk busy with their day. Each character is depicted with detail that suggests individual stories, adding depth and curiosity to the scene.Central to the painting, two women in conversation, draped in typical period attire, lead the viewer’s eye into the heart of the square. The presence of other figures, varying from a solitary man in black attire observing the surroundings to clusters of children, adds a dynamic mix of stillness and movement. The overall ambiance is one of vibrant everyday life set against a historic Parisian backdrop."Place St. Sulpice, Paris" not only reflects Raffaëlli’s keen observational skills but also his ability to convey mood and atmosphere, capturing the essence of Parisian life in a bygone era.

Jean-François Raffaëlli was a French realist painter, sculptor, and printmaker who exhibited with the Impressionists. He was also active as an actor and writer.

Born in Paris, he was of Tuscan descent through his paternal grandparents. He showed an interest in music and theatre before becoming a painter in 1870. One of his landscape paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Salon in that same year.
