More about this artwork

Welcome to a moment captured in time through the remarkable self-portrait of Albert Edelfelt, painted in 1874. At first glance, viewers are drawn into the composed intensity of Edelfelt's gaze. His piercing eyes appear to reflect a soul both thoughtful and confident. This quality is reinforced by the firm set of his jaw and the directness with which he looks out, engaging directly with the viewer.Dressed in a refined dark jacket with a hint of a white collar, there is a subtle elegance that hints at the seriousness with which Edelfelt approached both his attire and his art. The delicate brushwork captures the soft texture of his dark hair and the nuanced shadows on his face, set against a muted, textured background that fades into obscurity, ensuring that the focus remains solidly on the subject. The portrait is noted for its realism, a characteristic of Edelfelt's style, which helps to portray a deep personal introspection. Painted during his time in Paris, this piece not only reflects Edelfelt's physical appearance but also conveys the artistic ambiance of the era, offering a glimpse into the personal and professional environment that shaped his early phase as an artist. This self-portrait not only showcases Edelfelt's skill as a painter but also serves as an intimate encounter with the man himself, a promising young artist at the precipice of his notable career.
