More about this artwork

Titled "Fountain Study," this captivating painting by Francois Boucher exemplifies his renowned Rococo style, characterized by its playful and lighthearted elegance. The painting portrays two distinct scenes woven seamlessly into its composition. In the upper portion, a lively and charming group of cherubs joyously plays amidst a shower of cascading flowers and foliage, their figures dynamically arranged as if caught mid-movement. The soft, pastel tones of their drapery emphasize the lighthearted and ethereal quality of their frolic.Contrasting with the buoyant cherubs, the lower part of the painting features a classical statue of an elderly river god, sculpted with meticulous attention to anatomical details and a powerful sense of stillness and permanence. This figure, rendered in a more subdued palette, reclines languidly on a rocky base, encapsulating the timeless and serene aspect of nature.Through "Fountain Study," Boucher not only showcases his exquisite skill in blending vibrant activity with tranquil beauty but also creates a visual allegory of the youthful joy and the enduring calm that nature embodies.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
