More about this artwork

Maurice Denis's enchanting creation, "Slapend meisje krijgt bloemenkrans" ("Sleeping Girl Receives a Flower Garland") from 1899, bathes the viewer in a dreamlike tranquility while melding tenderness with artistic grace. This delicate depiction features a young girl, lost in slumber, her serene face the picture of peace. A spectral figure, perhaps an angel or a figment of dreams, gently places a garland of fresh, blooming flowers over her. The setting, illuminated by a muted palette, suggests a harmonious blend of reality and the ethereal world of dreams. Behind the slumbering girl, a lattice partially veiled by climbing, blossoming vines, hints at a secluded, lush garden which enhances the painting’s sense of privacy and intimacy.Denis, a member of the Nabis group and a significant figure in the Symbolist movement, here champions the use of soft colors and flowing lines that evoke an emotive and almost spiritual experience. This artwork not only highlights his mastery over color and form but also subtly weaves symbolist elements into the tranquil scene, perhaps suggesting themes of purity, innocence, and the fleeting nature of youth.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
