More about this artwork

Rosa Bonheur's painting, "Return from the Horse Fair," captures the spirited beauty and robust energy of horses with a brilliance that is as alive today as it was in 1873. This masterful work features a tumultuous scene of horses, vividly portrayed in mid-motion, reflecting the vibrancy and chaos of a day spent at a horse fair.In this panoramic landscape, Bonheur displays her exceptional ability to convey both motion and emotion. The group of horses, ranging in color from glistening whites and dappled greys to rich browns and chestnuts, are shown returning from the fair, each animal depicted with distinct individuality and expression. The horses appear almost lifelike, caught in various poses of galloping, prancing, and rearing, demonstrating Bonheur's keen eye for detail and understanding of equine anatomy.Handlers, dressed in attire typical of the painter’s era, struggle to maintain control over the spirited animals, adding to the sense of dynamism and tension within the frame. The background features architectural elements and a pale sky, which subtly complement the dramatic foreground, ensuring that the viewer’s focus remains on the horses and their handlers."Return from the Horse Fair" not only showcases Rosa Bonheur's technical skill as a painter but also highlights her deep admiration for the natural world. Esteemed as one of the most famous female painters of the 19th century, Bonheur’s work remains a testament to her pioneering role as a woman in the arts and her dedication to capturing the essence of animal kinetics and character.

Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style. Her paintings include Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.
