More about this artwork

"Reading Parisienne" (1880) by Albert Edelfelt is a captivating portrayal of a woman immersed in the leisurely pleasure of reading. Painted with soft, harmonious tones, the piece reflects a quiet moment of intimacy and intellectual engagement. The woman, dressed in a sumptuous pink gown, is depicted with a gentle expression, her attention fixed on the pages of a letter she holds delicately in her hands. Her attire, with intricate lace details and ruffled accents, epitomizes the fashionable Parisian style of the late 19th century. The backdrop, a blur of floral motifs and lush greenery, suggests a serene and plush setting, possibly an indoor space adorned with elegant tapestry and potted plants. The warmth of the colors and the diffuse light lend the scene an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility.Edelfelt’s skill in rendering the textures of fabric and the subtleties of human expression shines through in this work. "Reading Parisienne" not only showcases the artist’s mastery over fine details and composition but also provides a glimpse into the private, reflective moments of Parisian society during the artist’s time.
