This captivating work reflects Klee's ingenuity and his exploration of texture and pattern, resembling the intricate qualities of an aged leather tapestry. The canvas is a complex interplay of shapes and symbols that suggest a tribal or ancient script. The rich, earthy tones create a warmth that invites closer inspection, while the diversity in the markings and motifs evoke the feel of a meticulously crafted artifact. The composition is divided into patchwork-like sections, each featuring a different arrangement of geometric patterns and abstract forms. This patchwork effect contributes to its tapestry-like allure, making the painting a vibrant exploration of form and color. Strokes and dots, lines and patches blend in a harmonious yet enigmatic manner, compelling the viewer to decipher an underlying narrative or code."In the Manner of a Leather Tapestry" is not just a visual journey, but also a testament to Klee's ability to transform a flat surface into a narrative of visual texture and symbolic language that hints at ancient civilizations and untold stories.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
