More about this artwork

"Christ on the Cross with Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Dominic and an Angel," painted by the eminent Anthony van Dyck between 1622 and 1627, is a poignant exploration of religious devotion and ecclesiastical imagery. This masterpiece vividly captures the crucifixion of Christ in a dramatic intersection of sacred figures and celestial symbolism.Central to the composition is Christ, depicted enduring the agonies of crucifixion with a serene yet pained expression. His physique is rendered with meticulous attention to anatomical precision, highlighting Van Dyck’s mastery in illustrating the human form. Above Christ, a floating angel holds the INRI inscription, a traditional element noting Jesus’ charge as "King of the Jews."To the left, Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, gazes upwards towards Jesus, his face marked by an expression of deep sorrow mixed with profound reverence. Clothed in his typical black and white habit, he represents the pillar of faith and contemplative life.Contrastingly, on the right, Saint Catherine of Siena, a revered theologian and mystic, actively engages with the scene by gently holding onto the cross. Her gesture signifies her intimate spiritual connection with Christ and her role as a mediator between the divine and the earthly realm. Her dark habit and pale visage further emphasize her devout and ascetic life.At the base of the cross, an angelic figure, possibly representing a cherub, interacts with a skull, symbolizing the mortality that Christ’s sacrifice overcomes. The inclusion of this figure adds a layer of allegorical depth, highlighting the themes of redemption and eternal life. The backdrop of a dim, undefined landscape, adorned with the faint outline of a city, enhances the solemn atmosphere, focusing the viewer’s attention on the figures and their emotional states.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
