More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the enchanting and vivid world of Ralph Barton’s 1922 masterpiece, "Chauve-Souris (program)." This striking piece was created for the promotional program of Balieff's "Chauve-Souris," a renowned Russian theatrical revue that enjoyed immense popularity both in Moscow and abroad. Under the American management of F. Ray Comstock and Morris Gest, the revue flourished, captivating audiences with its innovative performances. In this painting, Barton captures the exuberance and dynamic nature of the Chauve-Souris performances. Set against a whimsically abstract background, the artwork is a visual symphony of color and movement. The composition features a group of performers adorned in elaborate, colorful costumes, each brimming with character and liveliness. The theatrical garb and expressive faces of the characters suggest a scene of lively action, possibly a dance or an act from the revue. The use of bold, swirling patterns and rich hues reflects the exotic and bohemian spirit of the performances, while the playful arrangement of forms and figures conveys a sense of rhythmic musicality. Barton's style here is a melding of art deco influences and caricature, which serves to enhance the theatrical and surreal quality of the scene."Chauve-Souris (program)" is not just a visual treat; it's a historical artifact that represents a significant cultural exchange between Russia and the United States during the early 20th century theater scene. This painting is an invitation to revisit a time when the stage was a gateway to magical, unexplored worlds.

Ralph Waldo Emerson Barton was an American artist best known for his cartoons and caricatures of actors and other celebrities. Though his work was heavily in demand through the 1920s and is often considered to epitomize the era, his personal life was troubled by mental illness, and he was nearly forgotten soon after his suicide, shortly before his fortieth birthday.
