More about this artwork

Steinbruch an der Donau" (Twilight. Quarry on the Danube) - Carl Moll, 1902Carl Moll's enchanting depiction of dusk along the Danube River, "Abenddämmerung. Steinbruch an der Donau," painted in 1902, transports viewers to a tranquil natural landscape that merges serene water, lush greenery, and the rugged texture of a quarry. This painting exemplifies Moll’s finesse in capturing the subtle interplay of light and its transformation of the landscape at twilight.Foregrounded by an expanse of tall, wild grasses and delicate flowers, which seem to sway gently in a calm evening breeze, the painting draws the viewer's gaze across a tranquil body of water. The reflections on the water's surface subtly mirror the varied hues of the vegetation and sky, enhancing the sense of quietude that pervades the scene.Beyond the water, a cluster of richly green trees serves as a mid-ground, dividing the Earth's ruggedness and the water's smooth expanse. In the distance, the stony facade of the quarry cuts into the otherwise unbroken natural scenery with its pale, rocky surfaces stark against the more softly hued environment.Moll’s use of color and meticulous brushwork in "Abenddämmerung. Steinbruch an der Donau" not only beautifully portrays the moment when day gives way to night but also captures a harmonious coexistence of human activity and nature.
