More about this artwork

"The Houses of Parliament, Seagulls" (1903) is a captivating oil painting by the illustrious French impressionist artist Oscar-Claude Monet. This artwork forms part of a series in which Monet devoted himself to capturing the atmospheric and lighting conditions of the Houses of Parliament in London at different times of the day and year.In this enchanting piece, the majesty of the Houses of Parliament is seen emerging from a harmonious mix of mist and morning twilight. Monet manipulates light and color masterfully, blurring the edges of the iconic building into the hazy, lavender-tinted sky. The river Thames in the foreground is portrayed with gentle, rippling strokes of color that reflect the soft light of the sky, enhancing the ethereal quality of the scene.Foregrounding this dreamlike vista, Monet includes a flock of seagulls in mid-flight, their white forms contrasting subtly against the muted palette of blues, grays, and purples. The birds add a dynamic element to the composition, emphasizing freedom and the fluidity of nature.Monet’s innovative technique of loose brushwork and his focus on light variations, rather than strictly realistic depictions, evoke an emotional resonance in the viewer, inviting a personal interaction with the atmospheric conditions of the scene. "The Houses of Parliament, Seagulls" captures a fleeting moment of natural beauty intertwined with human achievement, making it an enduring symbol of Monet's profound connection to the landscape and his mastery of the impressionist style.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
