More about this artwork

"Winter Mood with Rooks" (Winterstimmung Mit Saatkrähen) by Julius Sergius Klever is a captivating landscape that eloquently captures the serene yet melancholic atmosphere of winter. In this painting, Klever showcases his mastery in rendering light and texture, setting a vivid scene dominated by slender birch trees that rise against a softly glowing sky. The reddish hues of the tree crowns suggest the lingering warmth of autumn, contrasting strikingly with the snow-dusted ground. The scene is set in a tranquil, snow-covered forest path, winding invitingly into the depth of the woods. A solitary figure, accompanied by a horse-drawn sled, adds a touch of life to the otherwise still landscape, suggesting the quiet routine of rural life amidst the cold season. The presence of rooks, both in the title and as subtle details within the scene, contributes to the painting’s sense of quietude and the resilience of nature.Klever’s work is a beautiful example of Russian landscape painting from the late 19th century, evoking a sense of peace and introspection. It invites viewers to feel the crisp air and hear the soft crunch of snow underfoot, all while admiring the enduring beauty of the natural world in winter.

Julius Sergius von Klever was a Baltic German landscape painter.

His father was a chemist who taught pharmacology at the Veterinary Institute. He displayed artistic talent at an early age and took lessons from Konstantin von Kügelgen. After completing his primary education, was enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts where, at his father's insistence, he studied architecture. After a short time, however, he began to take landscape painting classes; first with Sokrat Vorobiev, then Mikhail Clodt.
