More about this artwork

Dive into the vibrant and tranquil world of Henri Martin with the enchanting painting "Trois petites filles au jardin, un matin d’été" (Three Little Girls in the Garden on a Summer Morning), created around 1903. This masterpiece invites viewers into a lush, verdant garden bathed in the warmth of a summer morning, where Martin masterfully captures the innocence and playful spirit of childhood. The painting features three young girls, each depicted in the midst of a joyful interaction. Their dresses, a cascade of soft pinks, whites, and flowery prints, blend harmoniously with the dappled sunlight and the rich greenery that envelops them. Martin's distinctive Post-Impressionist style is evident in the vigorous brush strokes and the vivid, somewhat abstract depiction of their surroundings. The children, somewhat ethereal and shimmering in the light, appear almost as part of the garden itself—a testament to childhood's fleeting and precious nature. As you observe "Trois petites filles au jardin, un matin d’été," allow yourself to be transported to that serene garden, feeling the warmth of the sun and the gentle rustle of leaves, all evoking a sense of peace and nostalgia. Henri Martin not only showcases his profound skill and sensitivity as an artist but also invites us into a moment of pure, unadulterated joy.

Henri-Jean Guillaume "Henri" Martin (5 August 1860 – 12 November 1943) was a French painter. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1917, he is known for his early 1920s work on the walls of the Salle de l'Assemblée générale, where the members of the Conseil d'État meet in the Palais-Royal in Paris. Other notable institutions that have featured his Post-Impressionist paintings in their halls through public procurement include the Élysée Palace, Sorbonne, Hôtel de Ville de Paris, Palais de Justice de Paris, as well as Capitole de Toulouse, although the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and Musée des Augustins also have sizeable public collections.
