More about this artwork

Welcome to a serene summer’s day at Hellerup Beach, vividly captured in Paul Fischer’s impeccable painting, "Ved stranden i Hellerup. Frk. Elisabeth Fischer og frk. Anna Pauline Bruun en sommerdag på stranden i Hellerup" from 1894.In this tranquil scene, we see two ladies, Elisabeth Fischer and Anna Pauline Bruun, elegantly dressed in the fashion of the late 19th century. The painting features these figures against a calm seascape that stretches infinitely beyond them. Elisabeth, on the left, is adorned in a soft pink gown with puffed sleeves and a dark hat decorated with flowers that adds a touch of drama to her attire. Anna, facing slightly away from the viewer, is clad in a flowing white dress with green accents, complemented by a matching green hat, looking out towards the sea.Fischer’s skill in rendering textures—the delicate fabric of the dresses, the soft, wiry beach grass, and the gentle ripples of the Baltic Sea—draws the viewer into a moment of peaceful contemplation. The muted palette and the soft horizontal lines of the sea and horizon evoke a sense of vast, open space and the gentle passing of time.Positioned in Hellerup, a picturesque locale near Copenhagen, this painting not only portrays the elegance of Danish summer leisure but also encapsulates a moment of friendship and quiet reflection between two women at the turn of the 20th century. This masterpiece by Paul Fischer invites viewers to a distant time and place, reminding us of the enduring beauty and calm of the Danish shores.
