More about this artwork

Julie de Graag's 1916 artwork "Oost-Indische kers," exemplifies the beauty and intricacy of the natural world through the lens of artistic expression. This striking image features a lush depiction of nasturtiums, plants known for their vivid orange-red flowers and round, lily pad-like leaves. These elements are rendered in a bold, graphic style that typifies De Graag's approach to art, marked by stark contrasts and a refined use of color and form.Central to the composition is a cluster of these fiery blooms, tightly grouped and almost pulsating with vitality against the crisp, dark background. The flowers radiate from a dense center, suggesting robust growth and the natural symmetry found in flora. Surrounding the flowers, the leaves are stylized with subtle shades of orange and brown, emphasizing a sense of depth and texture, while echoing the circular motif that frames the entire composition. This piece is not just a simple depiction of a garden variety but is also a window into the artist's ability to abstract natural forms and emphasize their underlying geometries, creating a harmonious and dynamic balance between realism and decorative art.
