More about this artwork

We invite you to step back in time with David Roberts' exquisite painting, "General view of Esouan [sic] and the Island of Elephantine," created between 1846 and 1849. This stunning piece transports viewers to the tranquil banks of the Nile in Upper Egypt, capturing the serene beauty and historical richness of the region. In this breathtaking work, Roberts showcases the grandeur of Aswan, historically known as Esouan, and the strategic Island of Elephantine. The painting is rendered with exceptional skill, highlighting the sharp contrasts of natural light and shadow that play across the landscape. The foreground is lively with activity, featuring a variety of boats, each vividly adorned with colorful flags and sails, gently floating on the glassy surface of the river. The background reveals the rugged terrain along the riverbanks, dotted with the ruins of ancient structures that stand as silent witnesses to the passage of centuries. The soft, muted tones of the sky and water suggest an early morning or late afternoon, adding a sense of calmness and timelessness to the scene.Roberts' use of light not only enhances the textural details of the landscape and architecture but also creates an atmosphere of peace and reverence for this historic locale. This painting, like many of Roberts' works, documents the majesty of Egyptian heritage and offers a window onto a world that few Europeans at the time had ever seen."General View of Esouan [sic] and the Island of Elephantine" is more than just a visual delight; it is an invitation to contemplate the enduring allure of Egypt's ancient landscapes, a celebration of artistic endeavor and historical exploration.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
