More about this artwork

David Roberts' exquisite painting, "The Great Sphinx, Pyramids of Geezeh," created between 1846 and 1849, captures the awe-inspiring grandeur of one of Egypt's most iconic landscapes. This lithograph is part of Roberts' larger collection documenting his extensive travels through Egypt and the Holy Land, providing invaluable visual records of archaeological sites and monumental architecture during the mid-19th century. In this striking work, Roberts portrays the Great Sphinx in dramatic detail, set against the backdrop of the towering Pyramid of Khufu. The Sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, is depicted with impressive realism and scale. Its serene and majestic face gazes into the distance, seemingly contemplating the sands of time while evoking a sense of enduring mystery and allure. The composition is enlivened by the presence of various figures dressed in colorful attire, representing both locals and perhaps travelers, congregating and engaging near the base of the Sphinx. These human elements not only serve to illustrate the scale of the Sphinx and the pyramid but also reflect the bustling activity that such monumental sites attract. The inclusion of camels resting in the foreground further enhances the authenticity of the setting, immersing the viewer in the everyday life surrounding these ancient structures.Roberts' use of light and shadow, combined with his meticulous attention to architectural and textural details, beautifully conveys the harsh yet awe-inspiring environment of the Giza plateau. The expansive sky and distant horizons invite the viewer to contemplate the vastness of history and the continuing fascination with Egypt's ancient civilizations.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
