More about this artwork

"Going to Mass" by David Roberts captures the serene and solemn atmosphere of a cathedral interior, beautifully illustrating the faithful congregating for the sacred rite of Mass. This finely painted scene depicts worshippers in devout procession, moving through the grand, Gothic architecture of the church. The towering arches and the detailed stonework create a majestic backdrop, with the altar and a brightly colored organ organically drawing one’s gaze along the aisle. The intricate play of light and shadow subtly enhances the spiritual ambiance, inviting the viewer to appreciate the quiet reverence and piety embodied by the figures.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
