More about this artwork

David Roberts' 1846-1849 lithograph "Island of Philæ on the Nile, Nubia" captures the serene and enduring beauty of one of Egypt’s ancient relics. This piece meticulously illustrates the tranquil setting of the island of Philæ with its distinct historical edifices, including the famous Temple of Isis visible in the background. The calm waters of the Nile mirror the soft hues of a fading sky, while small boats with local inhabitants float gently, suggesting the daily life and movement around this sacred site.Roberts’ work is renowned for its attention to detail and his ability to convey not just images but atmospheres. In this painting, he skillfully uses light and shadow to bring out the ethereal quality of the location, inviting viewers into a moment of stillness and historical reflection. The inclusion of flora and fauna, along with distant hills, frames the scene, emphasizing the isolation and preserved beauty of Philæ amidst the flowing waters of the Nile. This artwork not only showcases a profound respect for the cultural and archaeological significance of the site but also transports the viewer into a landscape that blends natural beauty with monumental grandeur.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
