More about this artwork

Henri Lebasque's painting, "Nu Assis Sur Un Canapé Près De La Fenêtre" (Nude Seated on a Sofa Near the Window), painted between 1934-1935, captures an intimate and reflective moment bathed in soft, ambient light that characterizes much of Lebasque's work. The composition features a solitary figure, a nude woman seated gracefully with her back to the viewer, attending to her foot. This positioning allows the audience to admire the curve of her spine and the relaxed naturalism of her posture which is emblematic of Lebasque’s sensitive approach to figure painting.Rendered in harmonious pastels, the scene is set in a tranquil room that opens to a vibrant garden scene visible through the open window. The interior is dappled with geometric patterns on the floor, perhaps of tiles or a decorative rug, which contrast beautifully with the organic strokes depicting foliage and trees outside. The open window invites the lushness of the garden into the otherwise serene and somber pink-beige room, suggesting a seamless blend of indoor tranquility and outdoor vitality.Lebasque's use of light and shadow, along with his distinctively muted yet expressive color palette, creates a sense of warmth and peaceful solitude. The outdoor landscape and the intricate details of the intricate blue pattern on the throw draped over the sofa add layers of texture and depth to the composition. This painting exemplifies Lebasque’s mastery in conveying a mood of quiet contemplation and his skill in integrating figures, interiors, and landscapes in a cohesive and inviting visual narrative.
