More about this artwork

Franz Marc's painting "Horse" is a captivating example of his unique artistic style, characterized by abstract forms and dynamic composition. This artwork, executed primarily in monochromatic shades, portrays the vigor and essence of a horse through a series of fragmented and angular shapes, breaking away from traditional representational forms to capture an almost spiritual sense of the animal's presence. In "Horse," Marc has deconstructed the familiar silhouette of the animal into a mosaic of sharp, jagged lines and contrasting dark and light areas. This technique not only emphasizes the power and movement inherent in the creature itself but also reflects Marc’s interest in expressing deeper emotional and spiritual truths, rather than merely replicating physical appearances.Marc, a pivotal figure in the German Expressionist movement, often used animals as subjects to explore themes of purity and redemption. In this piece, the horse, often a symbol of nobility and freedom, is rendered almost as a mystical entity, hovering between the realms of the seen and the unseen. This painting is not just an artistic representation but an invitation to delve into the interplay of form and emotion, encouraging a contemplative engagement with the viewer.

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.

His mature works mostly are animals, and are known for bright colors. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun.

In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £42,654,500 for Die Füchse (The Foxes).
