More about this artwork

Franz Marc's "The Birth of Horses" is an artwork teeming with dynamism and symbolic enamor. This painting demonstrates Marc's distinctive style and his philosophical devotion to depicting animals as manifestations of a more spiritual and pure realm. In this vibrant piece, the chaotic interplay of lines and colors captures the primal and transcendent moment of birth. At the forefront, Marc uses thick, sweeping black lines to outline the forms of two horses, their bodies entwined in an almost abstract array of shapes and curves. These principal subjects are enveloped in a tapestry of rich brown and subdued green, creating a feeling of earthiness and nature. Accents of red and white imbue the scene with energy and a mystic sense of creation. The composition is a striking example of Marc’s exploration of color symbolism and the expression of emotional depth through non-traditional forms. Rather than focusing on realistic portrayal, he seeks to evoke the raw essence and the spiritual resonance of the birthing moment. Through this painting, Marc invites the viewer to witness not just a literal event, but a profound and cosmic spectacle - the birth of life itself encapsulated within the poetic spirit of horses.Explore this masterwork and delve into a world where color, form, and subject intermingle to express the profound mysteries of existence.

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.

His mature works mostly are animals, and are known for bright colors. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun.

In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £42,654,500 for Die Füchse (The Foxes).
