More about this artwork

** George Barbier, a seminal figure in the Art Deco movement, continues to enchant with his 1924 masterpiece, "Visez au Coeur, Belles Dames!"—a title that translates intriguingly to "Aim at the Heart, Beautiful Ladies!" This charming illustration epitomizes the elegance and vibrant spirit of the 1920s, melding fashionable artistry with a playful narrative. The painting presents a striking tableau featuring a quartet of elegantly attired ladies and a gentleman, set against a stylized outdoor backdrop. Each lady is dressed in a richly detailed gown, showcasing the quintessential flapper era fashions. These include intricate beadwork, flowing silhouettes, and flamboyant hats adorned with jewels and floral motifs, characterizing the luxurious aesthetic of the time.Central to the composition is the dramatic act of one lady drawing a bow, aiming an arrow playfully towards the dandy gentleman on the far right. This gentleman, dressed in a sharp double-breasted suit, exudes a sense of startled amusement as he glances upwards at the arrow, which is directed harmfully away from him. Adding a touch of whimsical charm, a cherubic figure mimics the gentleman’s pose on the ground, its small wings fluttering as if in mid-flight."Visez au Coeur, Belles Dames!" not only captures an engaging scene of light-hearted jest but also reflects the social freedoms and evolving roles of women during the Roaring Twenties.
