More about this artwork

"Evening Attire" (1923) by George Barbier is a striking illustration that beautifully captures the allure and style of the early 20th century fashion. In this painting, Barbier depicts two figures dressed in lavish evening wear, showcasing the elegance and opulence that characterized the era's high society. The man is dressed in a sophisticated black tuxedo with a white waistcoat and bowtie, complete with a monocle and walking stick, embodying the quintessential gentleman of the Roaring Twenties. The woman next to him presents a stunning contrast with her vibrantly patterned robe adorned with rich, floral motifs and an intricate, exotic headdress. Her attire is complemented by a luxurious fur shawl draped around her shoulders, heightening the sense of drama and luxury. This artwork does more than just represent the fashion of its time; it also reflects the period's fascination with orientalism, which was popular among the European elite. The backdrop of the scene, illustrated with minimalistic trees and a stylized automobile, adds to the sophistication and refined atmosphere, suggesting a scene of departure to or from a high-society event.
