More about this artwork

Step into the captivating and stylish universe of "Midnight! … or the Fashionable Apartment," a remarkable illustration by the French artist George Barbier, created in 1920. As a key figure in the Art Deco movement, Barbier's work beautifully encapsulates the elegance, whimsy, and bold aesthetics of this iconic era. This charming scene is set in a luxurious interior, where a young woman in a fashionable, frilly dress appears surprised, as if interrupted while enjoying a private moment. Her pose—hand to cheek, wide-eyed with feigned shock—suggests a playful drama. Adding to the narrative are the theatrical elements around her: a lovingly detailed pooch with a mischievous expression seems almost part of the misadventure, while a kaleidoscope of patterned textiles and chic furniture decorate the space. A butterfly hovering nearby and a lush palm imply a connection to nature amidst this indoor reverie.Barbier’s use of bold lines and curvaceous forms creates a rhythmic flow across the composition, leading the eye through a variety of textures and colors. The distinctive Art Deco style is evident in the crisp, clear outlines and the stylized depiction of figures and objects, which include a fashionable mix of Eastern and Western design motifs."Minuit! … ou l’appartement à la mode" is not just an illustration but a reflection of the period's glamorous life and the intersection of art with everyday fashion.
