More about this artwork

George Barbier’s artwork "Au Lido," painted in 1920, captures the serene and playful essence of beach leisure during the Art Deco era. Renowned for his elegant and vibrant illustration style, Barbier presents a delightful seaside scene characterized by stylistic grace and pastel hues.In this engaging composition, a variety of figures are depicted enjoying the sandy shores of Lido, a popular beach during the roaring 1920s. The central figure, a tall woman clad in a simple yet fashionable white swimsuit, stands poised as she holds aloft a large blue parasol. Her stance exudes both grace and strength, while a small child playfully reaches toward her, adding a sense of liveliness and innocence to the scene. To the left, a group is engaged in intimate conversation, sporting swimwear that showcases the distinct fashion trends of the time, signaled by the elegantly stylized patterns and streamlined forms. Floral motifs adorn the garment of one woman, reinforcing the era's fascination with nature-inspired designs.Further enriching the tableau, we see individuals lounging, a man reclining on the sand, and people in the background engaged in various beach activities, suggesting a common thread of leisure and relaxation. The use of soft, flat colors combines with fine line work to create a sense of calm and clarity that is quintessential of Barbier’s work."Au Lido" not only reflects the leisure culture of the 1920s but also stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of tranquility and gentle joy found by the sea.
