More about this artwork

"Clodia Accompanying Her Brother," a striking artwork completed in 1929 by the illustrious George Barbier, captures a remarkable scene brimming with mystical allure and delicate intimacy. This painting features three figures set against a backdrop of night and nature, illuminated by a white, cascading fountain. The focal point of this composition is a pair of figures intertwined in a tender embrace. The standing figure, Clodia, is portrayed with an ethereal grace, her body rendered in warm tones that contrast harmoniously against the cooler, dark hues of the background. Her companion, presumably her brother, is depicted in a moment of gentle closeness, his form partly draped in a flowing scarf that adds a dynamic touch to the stillness. On the left, another figure crouches, engaging in the act of untying a sandal. This action introduces a grounded, human element to the fantastical atmosphere, crossing the boundary between the mundane and the magical. Each character, adorned minimally, carries an aura of classicism and timelessness, reflective of Barbier’s passion for the Art Deco style and his adeptness at blending modern themes with traditional sensibilities.
