More about this artwork

Dive into the heritage of Polish art with Jan Matejko's remarkable sketch, "Karton do polichromii Kościoła Mariackiego – Fryz o motywie stylizowanych liści oraz lilii w polach kwadratowych" (1889). An integral part of our cultural treasure, this painting is actually a design sketch intended for the polychrome decoration of St. Mary's Church, one of Poland’s most revered architectural gems.At first glance, the artwork enthralls viewers with its vibrant interplay of color and form. The sketch is primarily composed of square panels, each intricately adorned with stylized motifs of leaves and lilies. These symbols, rendered in bold hues of green, blue, yellow, and orange, convey a lush, organic texture that leaps beyond their geometric confines. The lilies and leaves are not just decorative elements; they carry a wealth of symbolic meanings, often associated with purity and renewal, resonating deeply with the spiritual ambiance of the church.Matejko's choice of colors—a vivid mix set against a backdrop of softer orange and beige tones—enhances the visual impact and highlights the artistry of his design. Despite the evident age of the paper, marked by its subtle signs of wear and gentle aging, the colors remain expressive, suggesting Matejko’s masterful ability to convey enduring beauty. This sketch is not merely an artistic creation; it is a testament to Jan Matejko’s role in the enrichment of Polish religious and cultural life through art. It invites viewers to appreciate the depth and meticulous details that define his work and continue to influence the aesthetic landscapes within historic spaces in Poland.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
