More about this artwork

This delicately rendered portrait is a captivating masterpiece by Jan Matejko, one of Poland's most celebrated painters, best known for his grand historical compositions. However, in this intimate portrayal of Maria Matejko, the artist's focus shifts to a subtler narrative, spotlighting an individual who presumably held personal significance in his life. The portrait depicts a young girl shown in a bust-length format, where her gaze directly engages the viewer, evoking a sense of quiet contemplation. Maria's features are painted with a soft precision, reflecting the innocence and the serene demeanor typical of Matejko's portraits. The subdued lighting accentuates her youthful skin and the thoughtful expression in her dark eyes, while her attire—a simple yet refined dress with an unadorned collar—mirrors the solemnity and purity of the era.The background is nondescript, a muted green that serves only to throw the focus more intently onto the subject herself. The artist's signature and the date, neatly inscribed in the lower right corner of the canvas, confirm the personal importance of the artwork to Matejko."Portrait of Maria Matejko" is more than just a depiction of a young girl; it is a testament to the artist's ability to capture the essence of his sitter's persona and a reflection of the cultural and personal contexts of 19th century Poland.

Jan Alojzy Matejko was a Polish painter, a leading 19th-century exponent of history painting, known for depicting nodal events from Polish history. His works include large scale oil paintings such as Rejtan (1866), the Union of Lublin (1869), the Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (1873), or the Battle of Grunwald (1878). He was the author of numerous portraits, a gallery of Polish monarchs in book form, and murals in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków. He is considered by many as the most celebrated Polish painter, and sometimes as the "national painter" of Poland.
