More about this artwork

In the evocative painting "Who Can They Be" by John William Godward, created in 1918, we are drawn into an atmosphere of contemplative elegance and serene beauty. Featuring a young woman poised in a moment of introspection, the artwork encapsulates Godward’s fascination with classical antiquity and neo-classical aesthetics. The composition showcases the woman dressed in a vibrantly colored and exquisitely detailed ensemble, typical of Godward’s attention to textile realism. Her attire is a rich amalgam of yellow and purple, draped gracefully, complemented by a red shawl and adorned with subtle jewelry that enhances her dignified bearing. Godward’s choice of colors not only highlights his subject but also echoes the warmth and tranquility of the setting. The backdrop of the painting serves as a visual escape to a serene, idyllic landscape. Beyond the meticulously carved marble balustrade lies a tranquil sea, leading to distant mountains under a calm sky. This juxtaposition of the human element with nature implies a narrative, perhaps of longing or contemplation, as the woman gazes downward, lost in thought."Who Can They Be" invites viewers to delve into a moment frozen in time—a reflective pause that speaks to both the beauty of the human form and the sublime nature that surrounds it. Godward's artistry in rendering textures, from stone to fabric to flesh, alongside his masterful use of color, makes this painting a captivating study in classical beauty and emotional depth.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
