More about this artwork

John William Godward's "In the Prime of the Summertime (Reverie)" (1914) is a striking testament to the tranquil beauty and subtle detail characteristic of the Neoclassical style. Depicted in the painting is a young woman, whose relaxed pose and thoughtful expression embody a moment of serene contemplation. She is seated on an elegant marble bench adorned with classical architectural details, which suggests an idyllic Mediterranean setting. The backdrop features a calm blue sea bordered by distant mountains, enhancing the painting's atmosphere of peaceful isolation. The woman's attire is richly colored and meticulously rendered, highlighting Godward's attention to fabric and drapery. The warm gold and deep purple of her garments contrast vividly with the fresh greenery and vibrant pink flowers that frame the stone bench, adding a liveliness to the otherwise calm scene. She holds a fan of peacock feathers, not only a symbol of beauty and luxury but also an element that complements the exoticism and richness of the scene. This painting is not just a display of aesthetic pleasures but also an invitation to experience a moment of leisure and reflection, characteristic of Godward’s work during this period. As a part of the Neoclassical movement, Godward's artworks often explore themes of beauty and antiquity, transporting viewers to a world both idealized and eternal.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
