More about this artwork

This exquisite painting, "Dolce Far Niente," which translates from Italian as "the sweetness of doing nothing," is a splendid example of 19th-century Neoclassicism. Created by the renowned English artist John William Godward in 1897, this artwork embodies a serene, almost idyllic quality that captivates and soothes its viewers. The painting depicts a young woman in classical attire, reclining leisurely on a tiger skin rug, capturing a moment of peaceful repose. Her surroundings are richly detailed, featuring a panoramic backdrop that suggests a luxurious, ancient setting. The deep maroons and earth tones of the architecture contrast beautifully with the soft, pastel hues of her garments.Godward's masterful use of color emphasizes the texture of the materials, from the softness of the floating fabrics to the intricate mosaics and the glossy marble steps. As the young woman plays gently with a brightly colored parrot, the interaction conveys a sense of quiet joy and the beauty of simple moments."Dolce Far Niente" is not merely an escape into the realm of beauty and tranquility; it is also a celebration of leisure, portraying the beauty of taking a moment to pause in our increasingly hurried lives.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
